Sealants

What is a sealant?
A dental sealant is a resin that is placed in the grooves and pits of teeth. The grooves and pits of some teeth are particularly susceptible to decay. Sealants serve as a protective barrier against food, plaque, and bacteria to prevent cavities from developing.

How are sealants applied?
Sealants are relatively easy to apply. It only takes a few minutes to seal each tooth. Sealants are clear or white, so they are not visible when you smile or talk.

How long do sealants last?
Over time, sealants may be lost or worn down. Sealants can last from 2 years to decades depending on your oral hygiene and use. Grinding and chewing on hard foods, such as ice, can cause sealants to breakdown quicker. It is important to have your sealants checked regularly by a dentist and reapply them if needed.
