Silver Diamine Fluoride

Silver Diamine Fluoride

What is Silver Diamine Fluoride (SDF)?
SDF is a revolutionary treatment option for the management of tooth decay. It is an antimicrobial liquid that is able to stop cavities from progressing. As with any treatment, there are pros and cons to using SDF.

Pros:

Quick, easy, painless, affordable. Compared to a traditional filling that required injections and drilling, SDF is simply brushed on the cavity to stop the decay and prevent future decay. Many patients find that this option is less invasive and more comfortable. It is a great treatment option for very young kids or elderly patients.

Safe and natural ingredients. The silver in SDF is a natural antimicrobial agent that kills bacteria that cause cavities. Silver has been used for ages in both alternative and modern medicine as a natural antimicrobial. For example, in modern medicine we have silver-coated catheters and silver-coated bandages.

Relieves sensitivity and remineralizes your natural tooth structure. The fluoride component in SDF hardens the cavity, strengthens the tooth, and reduces the stimulation of nerves that can cause tooth pain.

Cons:

Permanently stains the cavities black. Cavities treated with SDF will darken with time. This is an indicator that the progression of the cavity has stopped. Cavities that are treated with SDF can be replaced by a white filling or crown at a later date in most cases.

Not all cavities are eligible. SDF cannot be placed in the presence of infection or decay into the nerve of the tooth. SDF does not restore form or function of a tooth, so teeth that have large holes or are broken may still need traditional fillings/crowns.

Some cavities continue to grow. 70-80% of cavities are arrested with SDF. However, there are some cavities that do not respond to treatment. SDF requires repeat applications for maximum efficacy. Proper diet and hygiene are critical for long-term success.
